Cloud Spotting :
slow theatre manifesto
CLOUD SPOTTING is named after The Cloud Appreciation Society’s central tenet – that of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of the world around us.
THE IRONY of American Theatre today is that many of its makers are harried and rushed and have no time to look at the world around them and the people in it, even though supposedly/purportedly theirs are the stories we are telling.
Can we, in good conscious, tell people’s stories without watching them, speaking to them, truly listening to them?
What of the natural world? How presumptuous of us to replicate, explore, or present it onstage without spending any time in it.
And what of theatre-makers as artists and crafters? Good ideas cannot emerge in a vacuum. Overworked, stressed people simply cannot create or put forth their best work. Collaboration rarely comes to a complex and meaningful fruition in a few short months (or even weeks!), especially as the collaborators know this specific bond of people on this one project will soon dissipate and they are already beginning to look for or work on the next.
WE HOPE to nurture the artist as a whole, complex person outside of the theatre. How much better does one work when they have time to be engaged in other meaningful aspects of their life – family, friends, hobbies, exploring, learning, playing, relaxing, dreaming?
Slow theatre is about prolonging the entire timeline process of a single production from conception to production, or even the creation of theatre in general. It is about creating space within and outside of work life/culture so that artists can nurture their souls as humans. By doing so, they can bring that sense of centeredness, exploration, dreaming big, and creative problem-solving back to the collaborative process and the hard work of honing and sharing their talents.
NOW GO take a moment to go outside and look - really look around you.
